When streaming becomes too much: Why we sometimes can't stop

Wenn Streaming zu viel wird

Split:

Many people regularly watch series or videos. But when does streaming become too much? We explain what's behind it—and what you can do about it.

One more episode in the evening, then another... and suddenly it's three in the morning. You know that feeling? For many people, streaming is part of everyday life – for relaxation, to unwind, or simply for fun.

But sometimes this after-work routine becomes a problem. If you find yourself unable to stop watching, even though you really want to, it may be that your streaming habits are no longer serving you well.

When does streaming become problematic?

Streaming becomes a problem when you:

  • feel stressed or restless when you can’t look,
  • your tasks, friendships or sleep suffer,
  • often watch much longer than you actually planned,
  • Use videos to help you feel better – for example, when you’re feeling lonely or stressed.

In such moments, streaming is often no longer about joy, but rather about switching off and repressing things.

More and more people are affected

In the past, it was mainly children and teenagers who streamed a lot – now it affects people of all ages. Almost every family in Germany has a subscription to a streaming service.

And: More and more affected people are seeking support because they realize that they can no longer escape the cycle on their own.

Watching a lot is not necessarily a problem

It's important to note: Just because you enjoy watching a lot of series doesn't mean you have a problem. Only when you feel like streaming is negatively impacting your life is it worth taking a look.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I looking to distract myself or avoid feelings?
  • Does all the streaming leave me with less time for other things?
  • Will it be difficult for me to stop?

If you would like to say “yes” more often, it might help to get support.
